What is complete pet food?

Complete pet food contains all the essential nutrients your cat or dog needs in the right proportions for their intended life stage, when fed according to the feeding guidelines.

This includes the right balance of proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to meet their daily nutritional requirements.

Our complete Scrumbles recipes can be fed as your pet's main diet, without needing to add other foods or supplements to make them nutritionally complete. You can also mix complete recipes together, such as our complete dry and wet food. Just make sure you're feeding the recommended amount for your pet's age, weight and individual needs, and always provide fresh drinking water.

What is complementary pet food?

Complementary pet food is designed to be fed alongside a complete diet, rather than as your pet's sole source of nutrition.

It might be a tasty treat, a topper or something to add a little variety to mealtimes. For example, our Scrumbles cat soups and treats are complementary foods. They're great for adding something extra to your pet's routine, but shouldn't replace their regular complete meals.

As a general guide, treats and other extras should make up no more than 10% of your pet's daily calorie intake.

What are FEDIAF guidelines?

FEDIAF stands for the European Pet Food Industry Federation. FEDIAF publishes nutritional guidelines that help pet food manufacturers formulate complete and balanced food for cats and dogs.

These guidelines set out recommended levels of essential nutrients, including proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, based on factors such as your pet's species and life stage.

Our complete Scrumbles recipes are formulated to meet FEDIAF nutritional guidelines, so you can feel confident they're designed to provide the nutrients your pet needs.

Can I mix complete and complementary foods?

Absolutely! You can add complementary foods, such as our cat soups, alongside your pet's regular complete meals.

You can also mix different complete foods, such as wet and dry food, provided they're suitable for your pet's life stage.

Just remember to adjust portion sizes to account for any additional calories, so you're not overfeeding your furry friend.

How do I know if a Scrumbles product is complete or complementary?

You'll find this information on the product packaging and product page.

Look for the words:

  • Complete pet food: Suitable as a main diet when fed according to the guidelines.

  • Complementary pet food: Intended to be fed alongside a complete diet.
