They're all linked to gut health, but each plays a different role in your pet's digestive system.
What are prebiotics?
Think of prebiotics as food for the good bacteria in your pet's gut.
Prebiotics are certain types of fibre that aren't digested in the usual way. Instead, they're fermented by microorganisms living in the gut. This process produces useful compounds, including short-chain fatty acids, which provide energy for cells lining the colon. You'll find prebiotic ingredients such as inulin in selected Scrumbles recipes.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide a health benefit when consumed in adequate amounts.
Your pet's gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. Probiotics are specific strains of beneficial microorganisms, often bacteria, that have been studied for their effects on gut health. We include probiotics in selected Scrumbles recipes, so check the product packaging to see whether your chosen recipe contains them e.g Enterococcus Faecium.
What are postbiotics?
Postbiotics are preparations of inactivated microorganisms and/or their components that provide a health benefit.
Unlike probiotics, the microorganisms in postbiotics aren't alive. Postbiotic preparations can contain components of microorganisms and substances produced during fermentation. You'll find postbiotics in selected Scrumbles recipes.
What's the difference?
| What are they? | Easy way to remember |
Prebiotics | Certain fibres used by microorganisms in the gut | Food for gut microbes |
Probiotics | Live microorganisms with demonstrated health benefits | Beneficial live microbes |
Postbiotics | Preparations of inactivated microorganisms and/or their components with demonstrated health benefits | Beneficial non-living microbial preparations |
Does every Scrumbles recipe contain all three?
Not necessarily! Different Scrumbles recipes contain different ingredients, so not every product includes prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics.
You can find the ingredients and nutritional information for each recipe on its product page or packaging.
